How we do it

Our process towards tangible impact

Disaster risk reduction

We respond to all forms of disaster - personal, social, health-related, environmental, violent conflicts, and forced migrations. Through inclusive mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), we aim to prevent new risks and reduce existing ones, actively engaging across all three stages of disaster risk reduction.

Preparedness, mitigation and prevention

We work with local systems and organization to incorporate psychotrauma care and promoting a deep understanding of psychosocial support (PSS) and well-being. Our efforts aim to advance knowledge and skills for mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) preparedness. We believe that building communities of MHPSS workers is crucial for integrating mental health into future disaster preparedness strategies.

Critical response

Our rapid, evidence-based approach delivers tailored mental health and psychosocial support during the critical "golden hour" , the first few weeks and months following a crisis. We strive to understand and reflect the needs of the communities we work with including culture, language, and their priorities, fostering a space for authentic recovery and functional resilience.

Recovery

We support the building or rebuilding of technical working groups and trained responders, ensuring alignment with mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) operational standards. A key aspect of our recovery efforts involves providing appropriate support that enhances capacity and reduces vulnerabilities in people, communities, and systems through our hubs.

Community-based interventions

We focus on local ownership of humanitarian efforts, supporting community leadership and active participation in addressing mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) needs. By prioritizing sustainability and well-being, we help to empower communities to lead their recovery.

Hubs

Our transformative initiative unites dedicated mental health professionals, along with other committed individuals, both online and in-person, to deliver accessible, localized support to communities facing challenges and those in crisis. Through specialized training and a global network of collaboration, we bridge gaps in mental health services, empowering communities and organizations to drive positive change and enhance well-being worldwide.

Capacity building

We provide specialized training in mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) to individuals and communities, empowering them to navigate crises and support others. We also educate schools, health teams, and corporations on preventing trauma and promoting well-being, fostering a resilient and supportive society.

Communities know best

We believe in the power of community participation, fostering solutions created by and for the community. By building on the already existing community capacities and resources, we empower local stakeholders to address their unique challenges effectively and sustainably.

Our Story

Where the dream began

In 2015, Advocate Maria Jammal and Dr. Essam Daod stood on the shore of Lesvos Island. Along with Psychologist Mohammad Mansor and other volunteers, they waited for thousands of Syrian refugees to arrive in lifeboats.

What started as a humanitarian mission quickly focused on providing emergency mental health first aid for people experiencing unspeakable trauma. Humanity Crew was founded.

The Me You Can’t See

Humanity Crew co-founder, Dr. Essam Daod speaks about the importance of mental health as first-aid during crises on this Apple TV documentary.
